Kundalini Awakening : ACTIVATION OF ROOT CHAKARA Part – 6

Kundalini Awakening : ACTIVATION OF ROOT CHAKARA
Part – 6, Those who have not read the previous parts it is suggested that you read part – 5 and earlier, as this is a continuation of the text indicated in the previous post.

In order to activate the chakras each chakra has a specific Mudra or hand Position combined along with a pronouncement of a specific sound corresponding to the chakra we wish to activate. To begin with we shall start with Root chakara.

This type of meditations combines the use mudras, which are special hand positions, and meditation along with breathing technique and bandanas or holds to open chakras.

The mudras or specific hand positions have the power to send more energy to particular chakras or node and works in principle similar to acupuncture sending signals to the specific node. To enhance the effect further, sounds are chanted. These sounds are from Sanskrit letters. When chanted, they cause a resonation in your body that you can feel at the chakra they are meant for.

Prior to starting of this method of chakra activation, it is essential that a few basic habits are followed till the individual is comfortable with the practice and he is able to do the same without out extra effort.

The first breathing exercise that is to be followed is called as Nadhi sudha pranayamam. This means the pranayamam that cleanses the Nadies in the body. Nadi actually means flow and this breathing technique balances the internal flow of energy and pranan with in the body.

Sit in a comfortable asana keep your back as straight as possible. If you are right handed person close your right nostril with your thumb. Inhale through your left nostril, and then close it with your ring-little fingers. Open and exhale slowly through the right nostril.

If you are a left handed person close your left nostril with your thumb. Inhale through your right nostril, and then close it with your ring-little fingers. Open and exhale slowly through the left nostril. This is one cycle.

The reason for change in method between a left handed and a right handed person is that when an individual has a dominant left hand it means that his right hemisphere of his brain is dominant and vise versa. The purpose of this breathing technique is to create a balance as indicated above this needs to be remembered. Further in most schools of yoga this subtle difference that needs to be adopted is not taught. Even though this change looks apparently minor it is important.

Further the duration of inhalation and exhalation needs to be regulated, the duration of exhalation has to be double the period of inhalation. For example if inhalation is done for a count of four the exhalation is to be done for a count of eight. Over a period with constant practice the counts has to be increased to 6:12, 8:16, 10:20 Once this level is increased, and breathing happens effortlessly the individual will feel the difference with in and the person will be emotionally stable. Once an individual has attained the count of 8:16 and is able to maintain the cycle for a minimum of say 15 to 20 cycles then the person is ready to move on to the next step. With my own experience once this is accomplished, physically we will continuously feel a tingling sensation in the point with in the nose where the two nostrils meet.

Normally while breathing, between two of our nostrils most times one of it is closed or blocked. This indirectly indicates that one half of the brain is dominant. If the right nostril is blocked it means that the right hemisphere is active and dominant at a subtle level. Once the tingling sensation in the point with in the nose where the two nostrils meet is achieved, it must be possible for the individual to balance the two halves of the brain by mere thought, and the block in the nostrils will immediately be removed and breath balanced from both the nostrils.

To maintain this without losing what has been achieved continuous practice is to be done, and remember all this we discuss is a way of life and is not a form of medication that can be discontinued once the prescribed duration is over.

Additionally, food needs to be regulated with less salt and absence of spices, eating of meat, use of alcohol and tobacco and narcotics in any form is to be discontinued. To get into the details of why this needs to be done will need a separate series of post and so we will only understand that this needs to be followed. Just remember we are; what we eat and our emotions are dependent on it.

In order to activate the root chakar the mudra or the hand position that needs followed is to touch the tips of your thumb and index finger touch. Meditate and focus your attention on the Root chakra at the spot in between the genitals and the anus. Chant the sound LAM. In order to understand the pronunciation, please remember that "A" is pronounced as in "ah, "the "M" is pronounced as "mng."

This is to be chanted as we meditate on the root chakra for 7 - 10 breaths. Chant the sound several times each breath (for example three to four time) and keep your breath slow, effort less flowing through both the nostrils.

As the practice moves forward we will also need to combine a few bandhanas that are essential. But these are required for the raising of the kundalini energy and need not be practiced at this elementary stage. However these will be for sure required as we reach the completion of the activation of all chakras.

In the next post we will discuss why each of the above steps is to be practiced and share the actual process that happens internally before we proceed to the next chakra as proper understanding of this is essential.

May The Master’s Voice be with you.
